How to Read Hockey Stats: Goals, Assists, Plus/Minus and More

Hockey's box score looks simple until you try to compare two players — or two eras. This is a plain-English guide to the numbers you see on every hockey card, what each one really measures, and where it can mislead you. It's also the toolkit you'll use when you draft in 82-0-0, where there are no ratings, only stat lines.

The scoring basics: goals, assists, points

A goal is credited to the player who puts the puck in the net. An assist goes to the teammate (or two) who set it up with the last passes before the goal. Add goals and assists together and you get points, the single number most often used to rank scorers. Points reward both finishers and playmakers, which is why a pure setup man can lead the league without scoring the most goals himself.

Per-game rate vs. totals

Season totals depend heavily on how many games a player suited up for and how long the schedule was. To compare fairly, look at points per game. A player with a point-per-game pace is very good; the all-time greats have posted seasons well above that mark. Rate stats are how you spot a star who missed time to injury, or compare a modern 82-game season to the shorter schedules of decades past.

Plus/minus: useful but noisy

Plus/minus tracks goal differential while a skater is on the ice at even strength: you get a plus when your team scores and a minus when it's scored on. The idea is to capture two-way value the scoring columns miss. In practice it's noisy — a great player on a weak team can post an ugly number, and a role player on a powerhouse can look elite. Treat it as a hint, not a verdict.

Goaltending: save percentage and GAA

Goalies are graded on different numbers. Save percentage is the share of shots a goalie stops — the higher the better, and it's the cleaner measure because it accounts for how busy the netminder was. Goals-against average (GAA) is the average goals allowed per 60 minutes; lower is better, but it's influenced by how good the team in front of the goalie is at limiting shots. Before shots-against were tracked, historians lean on GAA alone, which is why very old goalies are harder to compare directly.

The era problem

Here's the trap that catches even longtime fans: the scoring environment swings wildly across hockey history. There have been wide-open, high-scoring eras where points piled up, and tight, defensive "dead-puck" stretches where the same talent produced far fewer. A point total that would lead the league in one era might be ordinary in another. Comparing raw numbers across decades without adjusting for the league average is the single most common mistake in reading hockey stats.

Adjusting for era

The fix is to measure a player against the league he actually played in. Instead of asking "how many points did he score," ask "how far above the average scorer of his own season was he." That's the idea behind era-adjusted indexes, where 100 represents the league average for that year — a 1980s sniper and a modern star can finally be compared on the same scale. 82-0-0 uses exactly this approach so that legends from every decade are judged fairly.
