82-0-0 is a free NHL roster-building game — the hockey sibling of the viral basketball game 82-0. You draft an all-era dream team from over a century of hockey history and find out whether it's good enough to win every game and finish a perfect 82-0-0 season.
A flawless NHL regular season is 82 wins, zero regulation losses, zero overtime losses — 82-0-0, something no team has ever come within twenty wins of (the 1976-77 Canadiens' 60 wins is the real record). Your job is to draft a 6-player roster elite enough that the season simulator gives you all 82. It's deliberately hard: only a near-perfect all-era draft gets there, so a true 82-0-0 is the holy grail.

Here's the catch: pricing follows raw, era-naive stats, so a dead-puck-era team is full of bargains while a run-and-gun 1980s star is a trap. The simulator, meanwhile, scores era-adjusted value the price tag never sees. Hunting that gap under the cap is the whole skill.
The whole game flipped upside down: draft the worst roster you can and try to lose all 82. The reels still spin — now you're hunting scrubs and beer-leaguers, and your best player is the ringer who keeps accidentally winning you games. A perfect 0–82 (à la the '74-75 Capitals) is its own kind of holy grail — the sim won't quite let you get there, which is the fun.

You're judged on dollars per win: spend the most, win the least. Spend too little and you're disqualified — the point is to flush money, not pinch pennies. A monument to the albatross contract.
One shared puzzle for everyone, every day — a rotating twist rule (for example "every player from a different franchise," a single decade, Original Six seasons only, or a tight budget cap). You get one ranked attempt, and your result lands on a global leaderboard; come back the next day to keep your streak alive. Your standing shows on the home screen whenever you reopen the app.
Hockey's scoring environment swings violently across eras — Gretzky's 215-point 1985-86 and a modern McDavid peak aren't comparable in raw points — so 82-0-0 neutralizes every player to a common league environment. Skaters get a PTS+ index (adjusted points-per-game against their season's league goals-per-game) and goalies a SV+ index (a saves-above-expected idea — literally the GoalTrax metric — with pre-1956 netminders scored on GAA-vs-league since shots-against didn't exist yet). On both scales 100 equals the league average for that player's own season, so a 1985 winger and a 2023 winger can be compared directly — no era guesswork.
Once all 6 spots are filled, your roster plays an 82-game schedule. The engine turns your five skaters' mean era-adjusted index into goals for and your goalie's index into goals against, then uses the Pythagorean win expectation to project a record — one elite netminder swings a season more than any single skater, hockey's catchers-and-shortstops. A weak-link penalty punishes the gap between your best and worst pick: one scrub on the ice costs you the cup, because a perfect team has no soft spots. A league-average roster lands around .500; only a near-perfect all-era draft brushes 82-0-0.
Player stats come straight from the official NHL Stats API (api.nhle.com), covering completed regular seasons from 1917-18 through 2024-25 across every franchise in league history. Relocations are merged onto their current club, and team names are shown as they were in the era you drafted from. Every skater's scoring is neutralized to a common league environment, and goalies are graded on a save-rate (saves-above-expected) index — all computed from raw first-party data, so ratings are fair across every era.
